Biography
Shelly Ezra was born in Israel. Her love of the clarinet was awoken by Yitzhak Kazap of the Tel
Aviv Conservatory. In 2003 she moved at the age of 18 to Germany and began studying in the
classes of Sabine Meyer and Reiner Wehle at the Lübeck Academy of Music and took additional
lessons there in chamber music with Diethelm Jonas, which enabled her to pursue her enthusiasm
for ensemble playing at an early age. She spent 2006 and 2007 on an exchange programme at the
Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, where she studied with Joy Farrall.
Between 2010 and 2012, the young clarinettist studied further with Martin Spangenberg at the
Franz Liszt College of Music in Weimar, after which a scholarship enabled her to spend ayear at the
International Ensemble Modern Academy in Frankfurt. Part of her work thereinvolved the CD
"Euclidian Abyss", released in October 2013 in co-production with Deutschlandfunk.
The numerous awards Shelly Ezra has received include third prize at the ARD Music Competition in
2008, first prize at the International Mozart Wind Competition in Braunschweig in 2006, special
prize at the International Clarinet Competition in Freiburg in 2009, second prize at the
Stockhausen courses in Kürten in 2013 and first prize at the Tel Aviv Conservatory Competition in
2002. In 2011 she won third prize for duet performance at the European Chamber Music
Competition in Karlsruhe and in 2009, together with Trio Arion, the Possehl Music Prize.
She has performed as soloist with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Chamber
Orchestra, the Bonn Classical Philharmonic, the Jena Philharmonic, the Philharmonie der Nationen,
the Collegium Musicum Basel, the Camerata Moravia and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. Her
performing venues include the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, the Konzerthaus in Berlin, the
Beethovenhalle in Bonn, the Herkulessaal in Munich, the Liederhalle in Stuttgart, the
Meistersinger-Halle in Nürnberg, Die Glocke in Bremen and the Rudolf Oetker Hall in Bielefeld.
Shelly Ezra has participated in the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Lübeck Brahms Festival,
the Braunschweig Classix Festival, the biennialcresc... (a modern music festival in the Frankfurt
and Rhine-Main region), and in the International Music Festival in Ceský Krumlov. She has
additionally performed at St Martin-in-the-Fields and the Wigmore Hall in London and at the
Centre Pompidou in Paris. Some of Shelly Ezra's concerts have been recorded and broadcast by
various German and foreign radio services.
Shelly Ezra is also in demand as a chamber musician. She regularly performs with the Ysaÿe
Quartet, the Apollon Musagète Quartet, the Quatuor Psophos and the Eisler Quartet, as well as
with Menahem Pressler, Sabine Meyer, David Walter, Radovan Vlatkovic, Martin Ostertag, Rainer
Kussmaul, Christian Lampert, Diethelm Jonas and Ingo Goritzki.
Since November 2013 Shelly Ezra has been solo clarinettist with the Orquestra Gulbenkian
in Lisbon.
